Wall & Ceiling Heights – Wine Cellar Design

Every home is unique, that’s why no custom home wine cellars are exactly the same. We always want our wine cellars to look their best, and to achieve this, we put a lot of hard work even during the planning stage.

Conceptualizing Custom Wine Cellar Designs

Your first step should be to draw a simple sketch of the room or space you plan to convert. It doesn’t have to be a beautiful or professional work of art, just a straight forward line drawing with its dimensions. Draw it as an overhead view of the wine cellar and label your walls clearly, A, B, C, D, E, etc. Note your doorways and don’t forget to show the direction that the door actually opens.

All wine cellar design ideas always start with a rough sketch.  We know a lot of ideas may come to mind, especially if we’re tapping into different design inspirations and we’d like to capture your imagination as much as possible. A rough sketch will give us an idea of what you initially foresee in your wine room or custom wine closet. Typically, rough sketches or concept drawings will illustrate the general layout of the room. This includes where you want the shelves to be, where you want the air conditioning to be, where you want the decanting table to be, where you want the door to be, and many more.

If you’ve gathered some specific details about what you want included in your wine cellar like the color of the racks, the shape of the racks, the material to be used in the door, etc., don’t forget to scribble in some notes so we can definitely incorporate them into the 3D drawings and design plans.  Throughout the entire process, we are a very collaborative team, so we’ll also help you brainstorm ideas and solutions for your preferences.

Measuring the Actual Space for your Design

Now here is an important step and where problems can arise later if it is not done correctly. For each wall, measure the width at the bottom of the wall, also checking it at the center and at the top. Note the smallest measurement in your sketch.

We need the shortest of these three measurements. Most walls are not as perfectly square as you might think, taking this step will therefore help to make sure that your racking will fit properly without the need for tricky adjustments when being installed.

Also carefully measure the ceiling height in each corner of the room. Take the time to check the height at the center of all of the walls. Add these maximum and minimum measurements to your sketch. Note the precise locations of any items such as electrical outlets, lighting switches, overhead or support beams, plumbing fixtures or piping, soffits, electrical or plumbing access panels and of course, air vents.

Generally, your wine racking should be 4-6″ away from any existing light switches, thermostats and or door casings. If there is anything you are unsure of simply note it in your sketch to be reviewed with your wine cellar designer later.

Wine Cellar Design Consultation

Now the fun begins! Once we have your initial sketch and the dimensions, we need to take a few minutes to discuss with you how you wish to store, manage and display your wine collection.

Our wine cellar designers will talk to you to learn all about what you want your wine cellar to look like, how you want it to function and to and address any challenges or limitations before the design is created. For example there may be unique constraints such as odd shaped rooms, mechanical equipment to work around or be concealed or some there may be special way you would like your room to function.

It’s important that we know and identify what you want in your cellar. Constructing a wine cellar is a big and expensive project and we’d like to help you make the right decisions so you won’t have to go back and forth. You might be wondering what’s there to further identify when the purpose of a wine cellar is to have a climate-controlled storage for your wine collection. Well, wine cellars don’t just store and preserve wines; they can also stand as a showpiece in your home. Basically, wine collectors, homeowners, and business owners have different priorities.

We’ve worked with clients who want to maximize the storage capacity of their available space, while we’ve also had clients who just want to have a wine cellar, put in a few dozen bottles for the sake of display. Furthermore, we’ve had clients who want their wine cellars to serve as storage spaces for their cigar collection (which also require specific conditions). All these and more will serve as bases for our final wine cellar design and plan.

This kind of meeting is usually through a simple phone call that typically takes about 15-30 minutes of your time.

Once we have a good understanding of your plans and any location specific challenges or limitations we will have everything we need to develop a 3D Wine Cellar Design Package. Your package will include a Plan View, Elevations and several 3D views that are designed to allow you to visualize the finished product in place.

Included with the drawings will be a highly competitive cost proposal.
