Creative and Eco-Friendly Ways to Design Wine Cellars: Wine Cellar Flooring from Reclaimed Nautical Timbers and Wine Barrels
Nautical Timber and Wine Barrel Flooring
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars offers different styles of wine cellar flooring. The traditional options include vinyl, tile, marble, brick, and hardwood flooring. Nowadays, using reclaimed wood for flooring is a trend. Our team of master builders has found a way to reuse reclaimed nautical timbers and wine barrels for manufacturing unique flooring for wine cellars.
Using Nautical Timbers and Wine Barrels to Create Unique Wine Cellar Flooring
When creating a custom wine cellar, the challenge and the desire of most people is to design something unique and personalized. For wine cellar builders, new materials that can be creatively used to create new looks are something they are constantly on the lookout for.
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars always wants every component of your wine cellar to complement each other and the existing theme of your home. As one of the top-notch wine room builders in California, we have built a good reputation in the construction industry.
We are also known for providing wine storage solutions that have a positive impact on the environment. One of these is creating wine cellar flooring using sustainable materials such as retired nautical timbers and wine barrels.
These flooring materials are durable enough to withstand the heavy weight of your wine racks, cabinetry, and furniture. They can also weather spills and resist the high humidity levels in refrigerated wine cellars.
Characteristics of our nautical timber and wine barrel flooring are:
- Reclaimed Wood Product
- Tongue and Groove construction
- Pre-finished and ready to install
- Random widths from 1 1/4” to 2 3/4”
- Total thickness of 5/8”
- Random lengths from 2’ to 5’.
The used wine barrels are broken into long strips (about 5/8 inches thick) and micro-beveled. The tongue and groove construction technique will make the flooring sturdier. Keep in mind that we need to install a vapor barrier before gluing or nailing the flooring.
Nautical Timber Flooring for Wine Cellars
Wine Cellar Flooring Made from Nautical Timbers
Antique nautical timbers obtained during the creation of deep-water ports are a major find. Exclusively from the ballasts and cribbage of ships that traveled the world from the 1940s to the early 1970s this material is inherently environmentally friendly.
When the ballasts are obsolete, the timbers are usually sold as firewood or disposed in the landfills. We want to help save the environment by giving the nautical timbers a new lease of life.
Nautical timbers are exposed to natural elements resulting in dents and marks that give them a unique appearance. The preparation of the wood is a process of delicately re-sawing to preserve the natural character and patina acquired over the years. We add Baltic Birch plywood as the backing to increase the structural integrity of nautical timber flooring. It is harvested from the birch forests in Finland, Russia, and other Baltic regions.
Wine cellar flooring from nautical timbers has a standout beauty and long-term durability, making it a favorite feature in residential wine cellar designs. It is also easy to maintain. Flooring made from nautical timbers will add a vintage and rustic feel to your wine storage space.
Limited supplies – Unique Looks – Wine Cellar Designs
This product ranges greatly in color, width, and character and gives a truly unique look to any wine cellar floor. While it is cost-effective by its very nature, the supply of nautical timbers is limited.
Wine Barrel Flooring
Another way to design wine cellars using sustainable materials is by turning reclaimed wine barrels into stylish flooring. Wine barrels have been used to ferment and age wines in wineries for many years. Fermentation of wines using oak wine barrels has a significant effect on the flavor and aroma of the wines. It infuses hints of cream, vanilla, caramel, or spice into the wine.
Oak wine barrels have a lifespan of five to seven years. After serving their purpose, they are dumped into the landfill as waste materials or sold as firewood. Our team of experts discovered a useful way to repurpose these wine barrels to reduce waste on Earth. We utilize them to create wine barrel flooring.
3 Wine Barrel Flooring Styles
Wine Cellar Flooring Made from Reclaimed Wine Barrels
We make use of all parts of the reclaimed wine barrels. Since no two planks are the same and come in random widths and lengths, every wine barrel flooring is unique.
Cooperage flooring is made of the top and bottom parts of the barrels, showing Cooper’s stamps and patinas from the winery where the barrels came from.
We use the wood strips from the inside part of the barrels to create Infusion-style flooring. It shows pinkish or reddish tones stained by the wine stored in the container.
For Stave flooring, we use the exterior parts of the wine barrels. You will see distinctive markings left by the metal bands and hoops that keep the barrel intact.
