Coastal Custom Wine Cellars’ residential wooden wine racks are well-trusted by many wine connoisseurs, homeowners, and professionals due to their durability and design. We offer ready-made wine racks, which we call wine rack kits, modular wine racks, which can be extended as you go along, and custom wine racking which can be pre-assembled or assembled on site. In this article, we will show you another home wine cellar that we built with a wooden theme in mind. Continue reading this article to know more!
Thick Custom Modern Wine Racking for 500 Bottles of Wine
Residential wooden wine racks can be produced using Mahogany, Alder wood, Oak, Pine, Walnut, Redwood, and other hardwood varieties. We carefully select the wood we use for our racks because we want the wood to survive the cool and humid conditions inside the cellar. By survive, we mean no warping and no molds.
Wine cellar racks are important because not only do they carry your wine bottles, but they also add more character to your wine cellar. For this wine room, a light-colored wood species was used to brighten the room slightly. You can see that the wine room is not exposed to outside light apart from the rays that go through the glass door. The light-hued custom wine racks were thus a great choice to keep the wine cellar from feeling too bleak.
The room’s height was standard, and we were able to install floor-to-ceiling wine racks. The racks were configured to display bottles in cork-forward and inclined label-forward positions. In particular, we call them the standard 750 racks and the high reveal racks, respectively. While we offer wooden kit wine racking sets where you can order and stack the shelves gradually, we always recommend going for custom wooden wine racks, so they fit perfectly into the dimensions of your space.
Through-the-Rack Wine Cellar Cooling System for Residential Wooden Wine Racks
Every well-built wine cellar is installed with a reliable, high-performing wine cooling system. When stored in a cool and humid environment, wine tastes and smells better, preferably between 45°F – 60°F and 50% – 70% RH. So, if you even had a small kitchen cupboard allotted for your wines, it should still be refrigerated at the most favorable temperature. Plenty of cooling units regulate both temperature and humidity. However, in rare cases where the humidity cannot stabilize, you can add an external dehumidifier.
We went for the WhisperKOOL Platinum Split wine cooling unit for this small wine cellar. It is a split-system cooling unit that produces very minimal noise — ideal for wine cellars, especially compact ones and those made of glass.
Since the WhisperKOOL platinum is a ductless split system cooling unit, it allows you to choose where to position the evaporator and the condensing unit. If you don’t mind having the grilles of the evaporator unit protruding inside your wine cellar, this cooling system is a great choice.
In addition, since our wooden wine racking here is custom-built, we were able to build the racks around the air conditioning unit, making it seem like it’s part of the racking system and maximizing the space! While some wine cellar owners opt to hide their cooling units behind custom wooden grilles, we figured we didn’t need to do so for this project, especially since the A/C’s color already blends in with the neutral palette of the entire cellar.
In the photos, it might seem that the unit is quite large; but when you step inside the room, you’ll see this A/C on the right-hand side of the cellar, absolutely out of the way!
Contemporary Wine Cellar Glass Door with Wooden Framing
To welcome guests into our wine cellar, we brought in a modestly-designed, wine cellar–grade door with a glass center and a wooden frame. Wine cellar doors are more than just your typical doors. They’re thicker, sturdier, and more impervious to moisture and sudden temperature changes than your regular indoor home doors.
We used great-quality hardwood for the frame and engineered it to prevent it from warping as well, which commonly happens when the moisture content of the wood is uneven. For the glass, we typically use at least a single-pane glass panel that’s ½”-thick and tempered and seal the edges with rubber gaskets, U-channels, stainless-steel frames, or in this case, wood.
The owner wanted to maintain a simple aesthetic for his wine cellar, so we didn’t add any other design features to the door, racking, and lights. However, should you want to add more stylish detailing to your wine cellar, Coastal Custom Wine Cellar can also do that for you! Visit our gallery to find more design inspirations!
