Building modern glass wine cellars for contemporary California homes involves artistic visualization and masterful execution. Andre and his team are no neophytes in building beautiful glass wine cellars for clients in and out of California. They have built countless beautiful wine cellars for clients through the years. Â
Creating a modern wine closet enclosed in glass will take time. But once finished, it will be a beautiful art piece that you can share with your guests to jumpstart your conversation. A client from California asked us to build a beautiful wine cellar in her living room. She wants more of a showpiece rather than a wine cellar that can hold the maximum amount of wine bottles. An Expert Custom Wine Cellars Designer Builds Modern Glass Wine Cellars for a California ClientÂ
Steve Pantalemon and his team have built countless modern glass wine cellars for clients across California. And we make sure our clients are happy with the final result. This project was no exception: the client loved her stunning new custom wine cellar. The client was looking for more of a showpiece for her wine cellar than she was for maximum storage. Â
Our team demolished a pillar in the living room to accommodate the proposed wine storage project. Then an open core was built by the team to run the copper lines of the cooling system. These copper lines are connected to the condensing unit located outside the home. Evaporating coils were placed behind the mirrored wall inside the modern wine closet. Andre and his crew also installed a spray-foam application behind the mirror wall from top to bottom. Lastly, the team placed plywood on top of the LED light panel above the cable racking. It was designed and built to securely hold the weight coming from the wine bottles.Â
Stylish and Modern Components of the Custom Wine CellarÂ
Whether it’s your first time seeing this modern glass wine cellar, or you’ve seen it multiple times, you can’t help but be amazed by its contemporary features. The minimalist approach to the overall design removes all the clutter and gives the wine cellar a clean look. Â
Acrylic Light Panels Were Installed to Add Emphasis to the Modern Wine CellarÂ
The crew installed a 3/4 inch acrylic light panel for the top and bottom portions of the wine cellar. These light panels have soft white lighting that you can adjust depending on the mood you want to set. What’s fantastic about these light panels is you can customize them depending on your preference. You can use it as a shelf to show off fancy bottles of wines or spirits. You can set them as a backdrop for wine racking set against a wall. For this project, the lit-up panels were placed on the top and the bottom of the wine storage. It was done to highlight the magnificent display from the cable racking system.Â
Innovative Wine Racking SystemÂ
The cable racking system for this frameless glass wine cellar is not something you see very often in a wine cellar. Bottles placed on it appear floating in the air. The shiny parts of the cable system further add glamour to the wine cellar. Visitors to this wine cellar will find themselves impressed by this beautiful racking system. Aesthetics aside, the cable racking system is triple deep and can hold 86 bottles. Not bad for a wine closet this size!
Cable wine racks are either assembled in the factory or on site. When in the factory, the tension set are already woven together before they’re shipped. So, you receive a ready-made cable wine rack system. However, if you prefer to assemble your rack on site, the tension sets will be shipped individually, so you get to install them one by one into your wine cellar.
The cables, although they seem slender and fragile, are made from highly-durable stainless steel materials. They don’t break even when the weight is very heavy, and they’re designed to cradle the bottles and protect them even if there’s intense shaking (like a mild earthquake). Coastal Custom Wine Cellars only works with highly trusted manufacturers who specialize and have a proven track record in producing cable wine racks. Rest assured you’ll have peace of mind if you opt to use our cable wine racking system.

Mirror Wall and Glass ComponentsÂ
A mirrored wall panel conceals the cooling system coils behind it. Reflection from the mirrored panel gives an illusion that the wine cellar appears wider and bigger. This is like hitting two birds with one stone and that’s one of the innovations we make when we’re brainstorming design options.Â
The team installed a ½ inch tempered, frameless glass for the walls as well. Three sides of the wine cellar are comprised of glass panels, including the door side. The modern wine cellar door is also made of glass with a 24-inch polished stainless-steel handle. Tempered glass prevents condensation inside the wine cellar. It works in synergy with the spray foam application to help insulate the wine room from external temperature and humidity changes.Â
The thickness of your glass panels will depend on the amount of insulation you need. Oftentimes, when you’re home is located is a very hot location, thicker glass panels would be more likely. Some manufacturers even add Argon between two panes of glass to create that maximum seal. In some cases though, a 0.5″, single glass pane would already suffice. This is why it’s important to work with a trusted wine cellar designer and builder like Custom Coastal Wine Cellars — you can be certain that every penny you spend for your wine storage unit is not put to waste.
Efficient Cooling System and How the Team Insulated the Glass Wine ClosetÂ
Andre’s team installed a special and unique cooling system suitable for this project. It was a CVT cooling unit from US Cellars System. The company, US Cellars Systems, is the sole manufacturer of this type of cooling unit.Â
Installing the cooling system was a bit complex because of the mirror walls. As you can see in the final build photos, the cooling system vent shows through the mirror wall in a very subtle way. It was a challenging task to work with a mirror wall. Nonetheless, the team completed it without compromising quality.Â
Maintaining the optimum wine temperature and humidity is critical for any wine cellar. The spray foam application done by the team was a massive help in insulating the wine cellar. A U-channel added to the top and bottom was built to insulate the wine closet from the temperature outside. The tempered glass application also deters condensation and protects the wine cellar from external temperature and humidity fluctuation.Â
Modern Glass Wine Cellars are Trending in CaliforniaÂ
Custom glass wine cellars are becoming more popular in California. People are attracted to the idea of having a contemporary work of art embodied in their custom wine cellar. For this project, the client wanted a wine cellar to serve as a conversation piece for her art-savvy guests. The clean lines from the cable wine display racking system and minimalist effect from the glass panels will arouse the curiosity of any modern art enthusiast. Â
Build a home wine cellar with a spectacular design that precisely reflects your vision. No matter what design you want, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars will work hard to find the right solutions for your wine cellar, wherever you are located.
