A Quick Rundown of the Transitional Glass Wine Cellar
This transitional glass wine cellar has both wooden and glass components. It was built between the dining area and the kitchen. But the entrance of the wine cellar projects towards the dining room. The location of the modern glass wine room adds an elegant ambiance as the owners enjoys their meals at the dining table. And a centrally located residential wine cellar like this allows for easy access to the perfect wine accompaniment for dining and entertaining. The glass walls and doors complement the wooden wine racking inside the wine cellar.
Classy and Modern Wooden Wine Racking System for the Wine Cellar with Glass Walls
Alderwood was used in building the wooden wine racking system. Wine cellar design experts like Coastal Wine Cellars prefer to use Alderwood in many projects. Even without staining, the grain of Alderwood is beautiful. In this wine cellar build, the team used a dark stain to give the wine racking a darker and more sophisticated look. The intricate grain pattern on the wooden back panel has a striking contrast with the dark stain of the Alderwood. The combination of the light tones from the back panel and the dark tones from the Alderwood looks impressive, especially if the LED lighting on its channels is turned on.
Artistic Design of the Wine Racking System in this Transitional Glass Wine Cellar
The semi-symmetrical design of the wooden racking system of the transitional glass wine cellar looks clean and well-organized. The left and right side of the racks intersects perpendicularly with each other. Both ends of the racking system have horizontal racks placed on top of each other. Then, centrally located are vertical racks with label-forward orientation. Above the vertical racks are cork-forward square bins that store about ten bottles each. Bisecting these square bins on the left side are single-deep cork-forward racks. Located on the lower part of the racking system are two diagonal racks separated by a single-deep cork forward rack.
The team also installed a wooden center table made of dark-stained Alderwood, where the client can decant and enjoy his wines. Below the table, there’s a space where he can store wine cases.
This modern wooden wine racking orientation is aesthetically pleasing and maximizes the wine storage for this wine cellar. Surprisingly, this wine cellar can store up to 616 bottles. That’s an impressive number for a beautiful wine cellar this size.
Luxurious Glass Components of the Transitional Wine Room
Using glass panels for walls and doors in a wine cellar is something you should entrust with wine cellar design experts like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars. Any glass won’t do since glass doesn’t behave like your usual materials for wine cellar doors and walls.
Glass tends to allow condensation in the wine cellar, especially if there’s a fluctuating temperature and humidity. Condensation is a favorable condition for mold growth. Mold formation is something that you wouldn’t want in your wine cellar. Molds in the wine cellar can affect the sealing capability of corks in your bottles. Oxidation will happen, and premature aging of your wines will be inevitable.
For this project, the Coastal team used ¾ inch insulated glass panels for the walls and the door. This glass grade is sufficient to block fluctuating temperature and humidity outside the wine cellar.

Concealed and Noise-Free Wine Cellar Cooling System
The team installed a split-type cooling unit from Wine Guardian for this project. This cooling unit has two separate parts: the evaporator and condensing unit. The evaporator was placed on the soffit above the ceiling. In comparison, the condensing unit was ducted outside of the home. The cooling unit from Wine Guardian has almost zero visibility inside the wine room. The only conspicuous part of the refrigeration unit is the control panel for the thermostat, which the client may adjust to his preference.
Additionally, no mechanical noise could be heard resonating inside the wine cellar. The ducting system nulls out the noise coming from the fans and the motor of the cooling unit. The absence of noise is a desirable feature among wine cellar owners. Noise coming from the cooling unit can sometimes be distracting while enjoying your wine inside the wine cellar.
The optimum temperature and humidity for wine storage are 55°F to 57°F and 60%, respectively. These conditions will facilitate the delicate wine aging process, retards mold growth, and prevent the cork from shrinking or losing its sealing ability. Going beyond and below these optimum conditions may potentially compromise the quality of wines stored in the wine cellar.
Tips in Maintaining the Optimum Temperature and Humidity for Your Wine Cellar with Glass Walls
• Work with professionals. You must work with professionals, like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, to help build your glass-enclosed wine room. Experts do a heat load calculation of the proposed wine cellar build before starting the building process. Heat load calculation is necessary for determining what cooling system to install in a wine cellar. It will give the team an idea of how many BTUs are needed to cool the wine cellar efficiently.
• Spray foam application is a must in every wine cellar. Yes, spray foam application is a prerequisite in every wine cellar build, regardless of the size. Spray foam application prevents the formation of water droplets within the wall cavity of the wine cellar. These water droplets could indirectly contribute to the formation of molds inside the wine cellar.
• Use at least ¾ insulated glass panels. Installation of glass panels could be problematic if the installing team has no experience or knowledge in building a glass-enclosed wine cellar. Work with expert wine cellar designers to ensure the materials used for your wine cellar project comply with the industry standards.
