Glass wine rooms can be challenging, especially in a bright living room. As the demand for luxury, custom-built wine cellars in California homes continues to rise, so does the need to become more innovative and creative in designing and building these cellars — precisely what the Coastal Custom Wine Cellars team did for this Dana Point project! This was a newly constructed home with a homeowner who wanted to place a wine cellar in the corner of their living room. Read this article to learn more about the unique nitty-gritty of this incredible custom glass wine room!
Advanced Wine Cellar Lighting Perfect for All Glass Wine Rooms
When you want a glass wine cellar, every corner of your wine room has to look nice and put together since everything will be visible. While racking is highly important in the design of your cellar, selecting the right wine cellar lighting will make a tremendous difference. For this modern glass wine cellar, we went for LED-lit walls for the upper half. The technology makes use of LED light panels fixed behind white acrylic boards. This way, when the wine cellar lights are turned on, a sophisticated glow is produced since the acrylic boards diffuse the LED lights very smoothly.
The next great thing about these acrylic boards is they can be customized to cater to metal wine peg racks. We bore holes through the boards where the pegs could fit, and the boards were able to hold up even when we started stocking the wine rack with heavy wine bottles.
This novel wine cellar lighting design really highlights the wine collection and cellar stunningly, and we’re stoked to introduce this new wine cellar lighting tech to more glass wine rooms in California, both residential and commercial.
Well-Configured Custom Wine Racks for All Types of Wine Cellars
To complement the subtle lighting design and modern aesthetic of this walk-in glass wine closet, we incorporated two main types of wine racking: a wooden wine racking system on the lower half of the walls and modern metal wine peg racking on the upper half of the walls.
The custom wooden wine rack was made from Alderwood, stained, and finished with lacquer. It has compartments for standard-sized wines (750ml) and magnum wines (>750ml). We combined high-reveals, horizontal shelves, and diamond bins to create the entire wooden wine racks, and they can already house a considerable number of bottles, especially since the horizontal racks are triple deep.
We brought chrome-finished, stainless steel pegs for the metal wine peg rack where a pair could hold three standard-sized wine bottles. The pegs provide a very minimalist yet modern at the same time. They’re also great to use with the acrylic LED light design since they don’t take up too much space and allow the bottles to get all the attention.
Lastly, as a statement piece, we installed one open-metal box at the center of the rack, which could house a full-on, 6-liter wine bottle. These types of display boxes can also be customized to your liking and the available space.
The combination of metal and wooden racks in this glass wine room and the gorgeous, state-of-the-art lighting design make this contemporary wine cellar stand out.
Ultra-Efficient Wine Cellar Cooling System and Insulation
When you want a glass wine cellar, remember that glass transfers heat fast. This is why you’ll need extra layers of material/coating to keep the outside heat from causing moisture formation on the glass panels. Particularly, we use tempered glass that is at least ½ inch. Tempered glass rarely fogs or supports moisture formation no matter the temperature difference between the inside and outside the cellar, so they’re perfect for glass wine cellars. To add more insulation to the entire room, we installed a vapor barrier behind the non-glass wall parts of the cellar. Vapor barriers prevent moisture from seeping through
wooden/cement walls, so they’re vital, especially in damp/rainy areas.
The degree of insulation would also depend on the type of cooling system you want. In this cellar, we opted for the ducted wine cooling unit from HS. Ducted units are great for small wine cellars since they don’t take up or require too much indoor space. They can also be easily controlled so you can maintain the right cooling temperature for your wine collection.
