Designing and Building a Modern Glass Wine Closet

Andre Trabazos of Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, converted a storage closet to a modern glass wine closet for a client. It was a contemporary home with a lavish interior design. Andre knew that he had to build something special to add more flare to this client’s home. In this case, the client prioritized aesthetics over capacity for his wine cellar. This Modern Glass Wine Closet Was Difficult to Build!

Overview of the Design Process and Construction of the Modern Glass Wine Closet

This modern wine cellar looks amazing with its double-paned tempered glass doors.

The client had previously hired Andre for a different project for his home. He wanted to build a wine cellar close to his dining area. His familiarity with the process, artistry, and professionalism of Andre’s team made the communication for this modern glass wine closet project seamless.

The final design for the modern glass wine closet took about two weeks. This is a quick time frame as it could take months for planning alone for some projects. Planning for your wine cellar shouldn’t be rushed. And, the final design should always resonate with the ideal wine cellar that you have in mind.

The team had to make a few changes during the construction of the wine cellar. The owner altered his home at that time, which directly affected the original wine cellar plan. So, Andre’s team adjusted the plan accordingly, while staying true to the client’s vision for his dream wine cellar. Construction of the wine cellar was done in 6 weeks.

Contemporary Wine Racking System with Beautiful Back Panel

The majority of the home was built with white oak. To complement the oak-inspired interior, the team stained a similar color for the wooden parts of the modern wine cellar. In this case, the wooden parts are the left and right panels of the wine room. Three columns of triple-deep metal wine racks from Vintage View were mounted on these wooden panels. These racks were designed to display the wine labels forward.

But what’s truly eye-catching are the mirror tiles installed in the center of the wine closet. The team spent quite a bit of time installing this beautiful and luminous panel. Once done, it gave emphasis and visual to the center of the wine room. For the central panel, the team installed wine shelves as Andre saw that this would be the best way to present the wine for this area. The client will display select wines here, so upon entering the modern glass wine cellar, you can easily see all his exquisite wines in the center.

You could say that this is a transitional wine cellar because of traditional (wooden panels) and modern (metallic racks) elements. It’s like having the best of both worlds while increasing the aesthetic appeal of the wine storage area.

Dimmable Wine Cellar Lighting

The team strategically installed 2″ recessed can lights on the ceiling. Andre opted to use LED light bulbs so they won’t emit any extra heat that could potentially ruin wines in storage. Another feature of the lighting is that you can adjust its brightness. If the client wants a bright light to highlight his wine collection, he can adjust the level to his desired brightness. If he instead wants a more mellow ambient background light coming from the wine cellar, he could also accomplish this by adjusting the dial. The control panel for the lightning was installed so that the client could easily adjust the brightness without going inside the wine cellar.

Efficient Cooling System for the Modern Wine Cellar

The wooden grille enclosure removes the presence of any unsightly evaporating coils inside the wine room.

The Coastal team did a heat load calculation before they started installing a cooling system for the wine cellar. Then, Andre advised the client to install a split-type cooling unit for the wine cellar based on the heat load calculation. A split-type cooling system has separate components for the condenser and the evaporator.

For this project, the evaporator was placed on the ceiling. Then, it was covered with a wooden grille. In this sort of system, the condenser is placed outside the home. This type of cooling system produces minimal to no noise inside the wine cellar.

And finally, to optimize the cooling system efficiency of the wine cellar, the team installed a double-paned glass for its doors and outer walls. Gaskets come in contact with both glass doors when closed. This mechanism ensures that there will be no leakage or any external temperature penetrating the interior of the wine room.

Mirror tiles adds elegance and sophistication to the contemporary glass-enclosed wine cellar.

The modern glass wine closet project was a success. The client was pleased with the final result. He now takes pride in showcasing his favorite wines in his custom wine cellar with his friends and family. This beautiful and contemporary wine cellar is, undoubtedly, a great conversation piece for your friends and coworkers.

The wine racking system was both beautiful and helpful in organizing the client’s collection. Wine pegs on the side gives every bottle placed there an illusion that it is floating. While, upright bottles on the center shines like every vintage and priced wines should.

Efficient refrigeration inside the wine room is the result of careful planning and implementation. The client is confident that optimum temperatures will always be maintained inside the wine room. Elimination of noise coming from the cooling unit is plus. And, the minimal appearance of the cooling unit in wine cellar means more room for storing wines.

The glass door is another great feature of this custom wine cellar. You can readily see the wine collection from the dining area. Lastly, the lighting in the wine room is so versatile. You can adjust it depending on how you want to set the mood.
