Custom wooden wine racks allows you to harness the possibility of storing all the bottles you want in one room. Wooden wine rack designs are infinite, and while there are dozens of pre-fabricated racks in the market, customizing gives you more flexibility (and cost savings too!)
In this article, an expert wooden wine-racking designer and builder, shares with us some of the projects he has completed over the years. You’ll see how he intertwines design and functionality into his creations, producing absolutely unique wine racks for every one of his clients.
Whether you have a wine cellar under the stairs, in your kitchen, study, or basement, you can apply these ideas to have a stylish, space-maximizing wooden wine rack!
Massive Custom Wine Rack in White, Ripped Oak
Customizing your wine racks is a highly recommended approach, whether you prefer wooden or metal ones. It is practical and ensures that the size and shape perfectly fit your intended space. By customizing your wine racks, you gain creative freedom in planning your entire wine cellar without compromising on other features just to accommodate over-the-counter wine racks.
Storage Types
Let’s talk about the wonderful features of these wooden wine racks. In this project, the designer Combined different storage options in one massive wine rack. It features five distinct types of storage: lattice X bins, horizontal racks for standard-sized bottles, high reveals, crate storage for wine boxes, and three ¾ cubbies that can elegantly hold champagnes, burgundies, and other standard bottles, cork-forward.
To add an extra touch of charm and functionality, he incorporated a custom solid arch at the center of the right-side rack and a spacious stemware holding area on the left-side rack. This provides a convenient space for pouring and enjoying wines or even creating your own delightful cocktails using other liquors from your collection.
Additionally, his team installed cabinets and drawers designed with sub-closing hinges within the same wooden wine rack to store all the wine tools, cloth wipes, and other materials necessary for the enjoyment and maintenance of the collection.
A Suitable Polishing Solution for Custom Wine Racks
Wood naturally has a beautiful texture, and his furniture makers have meticulously polished the surface to make it smooth, visually appealing, and safe from splinters. Typically, lacquer is used as a finishing touch to achieve this, but it can sometimes leave a lingering smell even after drying, which some homeowners prefer to avoid. To address this concern, they opted to wax the white ripped oak wine rack instead of lacquer. Even without lacquer, they achieved a shiny, smooth finish that looks absolutely lovely.
Capacity
This custom wine racking solution can comfortably hold over 900 bottles (including 16 magnums), not counting the crate storage, cabinets, and decanting area. Quite impressive for a medium-sized display area, wouldn’t you agree?
Custom Wooden Wine Racks with a Unique Inventory System
Picture this: two inviting lounge chairs just outside the wine cellar, where you can comfortably sip your favorite wine and immerse yourself in the pages of your beloved book. This next home wine cellar truly creates a lovely ambiance, combining the pleasure of wine with the joy of a quiet reading nook.
Wood of Choice: Alder Wood
When it comes to custom wooden wine racks or furniture in general, the quality and appearance of the wood are always in the spotlight. That’s why selecting a wood variety that looks fantastic and withstands the test of time, especially in humid conditions inside a wine cellar, is crucial. In the case of this charming wine closet in Huntington Beach, the owners opted for Alder wood stained with a beautiful gray color.
Alder wood is a softer hardwood known for its lightweight nature and remarkable strength. It’s the perfect choice for crafting custom wine racks with curved corners and sides, adding an elegant touch to the overall design. Moreover, this particular wood variety takes stains exceptionally well, making it ideal if you have a specific look or finish in mind.
Storage Types
This custom wooden wine rack features a symmetrical design complete with two rows of high reveal racks, lattice 750ml racks, crate storage, three-bottle-deep horizontal racks, diamond bins, and vertical shelves with LED shelf bases. There’s primarily a space for every type and size of bottle in this wine rack!
The central part of this wooden wine racking is a decanting area with a gorgeous marble countertop. They attached a few stemware racks above it, allowing wine glasses to hang, creating a convenient and visually pleasing setup. To further enhance the aesthetic appeal, they adorned the backdrop with an artistic masterpiece the owners had acquired from Napa Valley, adding a personal touch and a captivating focal point.
Organization is Key to This Beautiful Wine Display
You might not realize it at first glance, but this transitional wine cellar can hold an impressive total of 450 wine bottles! That’s quite remarkable, considering the size of the space. But what sets this wine cellar apart further is the unique labels the client requested to be embedded onto the wine racks.
Take a closer look at the racks; you’ll notice letters running from left to right and numbers running from top to bottom. This clever labeling system lets the owners quickly identify which wines have been depleted or need replenishment. It’s like having a well-organized inventory right at their fingertips. This efficient wine racking system is just as reliable as the cellar’s top-notch ducted split-system cooling unit!
By implementing an effective organization system, you’ll have the joy of easily finding and enjoying your favorite bottles. Whether you’re in the mood for a specific type of wine or want to showcase your collection to guests, having an efficient inventory system ensures a smooth and enjoyable wine experience.
With careful consideration of both practicality and comfort, they’ve created a space where functionality delightfully meets organization.
Wood Wine Racking for a Contemporary Home Wine Cellar
Last but not least is a custom wine racking project found inside an elegant contemporary home. The entire transitional wine cellar is enclosed in tinted, tempered glass panels, and the wine display units occupy two sides of this wine cellar.
The custom rack comes with an L-shaped, semi-symmetrical design that features three rows of high reveal racks, horizontal racks, crate storage, diagonal racks, diamond bins, and standard 750ml racks.
You can find horizontal racks on both ends of the rack, each facing the glass panels. So whether you’re in the dining room or casually walking along the hallway, you can see some of the owner’s most precious wines.
Like the previous project, the designer used dark-stained Alder wood to create this wine rack. The dark stain beautifully contrasts the back wall, especially when the lights are turned on.
Speaking of lights, the designer ran LED ribbon lights across the three high-reveal rows. They’re not visible at eye level because the team hid the lights behind a wooden valance. This lighting approach creates that special spotlight for all the bottles within the high-reveal racks, adding more depth to the wine cellar.
