A Classic Tuscan Home with the Heart of a Wine Connoisseur   

The wine cellar we’ll show you today was built inside a Tuscan-style home in Palos Verdes, California. Complete with the signature terracotta roof tiles, wrought iron railings, and crumbling stone walls, the classic European-style architecture of this home radiates strongly both on the outside and the inside. One would think a vineyard could be present somewhere on the property! Although this isn’t the case for this place, it definitely has an incredible, contemporary wine cellar that efficiently protects wines and helps keep the aging process continuing at a natural rate.  

This home was newly built, and the owner wanted a wine closet that looked on par with the home’s interior. Since Tuscan homes are known for using natural elements, we opted for traditional wooden custom wine racks and used the same natural stone floors found throughout the house.  

Terracotta floor tiles not only give that organic warmth to a space but are mostly naturally resistant to mold and bacteria when appropriately sealed.   

We combined different storage shapes to give more vibrance to our custom rustic wine cellar design.

Every Rustic Wine Cellar Design Needs to Have Wooden Wine Racks 

It is highly advisable to customize wine racks, whether you want wooden or metal ones. It’s not only practical, but it ensures that the dimensions are appropriate to the intended space. Customizing wine racks also gives you more creative freedom as you plan your entire wine cellar since you don’t have to restrict other features as much just to provide more room for pre-fabricated wine racks.   

Storage Patterns Are Endless with Custom Built Wine Racks  

The great thing about a wooden wine racking system is it can be built with a combination of storage options. One full wine rack can have many wooden compartments designed in different configurations. In this rustic wine cellar design, you can find five (5) different types: Diamond bins, horizontal display racks for 750ml bottles, high reveal shelves, cubbies for wine boxes, and 3 ¾ cubicles that could fit burgundies, champagnes, and other standard 750s in a cork-forward way.   

To keep things interesting, we also built a custom arch on the center of the first rack and a spacious stemware holding area on the other rack. This is where the owners could pour their wines, take a sip, or formulate their own cocktails using other liquors in their collection.  

Lastly, to store other wine tools, cloth wipes, and other materials needed to enjoy and maintain the wines, we built cabinets and drawers with sub-closing hinges within the same wooden wine rack. Polish Your Rustic Wine Cellar Design the Coastal Custom Wine Cellars Way   

Wood is naturally very textured; that’s why furniture makers undergo a strenuous polishing process to smoothen them, make them look good, and protect people from splinters. One of the most popular ways to do this is to paint lacquer over the surface as a finishing touch. The downside to using lacquer, though, is the smell. There are cases where the scent lingers for a long time, even after the lacquer has dried, and the homeowner didn’t want to risk it.  

Rustic wine cellar designs can be materialized using different types of wood. Here, we chose a variety of oak with a light color to contrast the black-colored glass frames. This made the wine collection more apparent from the outside.

To address this, we waxed our white ripped oak wine rack instead. Even without lacquer, we produced a shiny, smooth wine rack finish that looked absolutely lovely!  

Our custom wine racking could hold more than 900 standard-sized bottles and about 16 magnums, not including cubbies, closed cabinets, and decanting spaces. Not bad for a modest walk-in wine cellar!  

This Wine Cellar Has More Than Just Your Regular Glass Door 

We added a modern twist to this traditional wine cellar by using glass panels to close off the front side. We installed a single door made of the same glass material as the walls, and it’s different from what you typically use in the shower.  

Look at this beautiful, high-ceiling nook that the team created. It’s a tasteful space where the owners could decant their wines inside their rustic wine cellar.

Wine cellar doors need to be single-paned — at least — so they can adequately protect the entire cellar from the ever-changing weather outside. For this project, though, we opted for dual-paned glass panels and fixed them onto the walls with black, stainless-steel frames. Doubling the panels would further ensure that heat wouldn’t be able to flow through the glass and combine with the cool air inside, which could affect the humidity.   

Furthermore, with this design choice, we were able to install special horizontal wooden wine shelves on the corner so everyone can see the wines more up-close without entering the cellar. 

Reading Wine Labels Has Never Been Easier with these Custom Wine Cellar Lights!  

If you notice, the bottles inside this wine cellar are displayed in different positions. Some are horizontal, some are vertical, and some are cork-forward. Since wood is dense and can block light from reaching the bottles, ceiling lights were not enough to keep this wine cellar convenient for the owners. So, we ran custom LED channel lights along the high reveal racks and placed a puk light on the arch so the owners could read the bottles in clear sight.   

On top of our custom arch, we decided to put in horizontal shelves with ample space to hold magnum-sized bottles.

Not only was our lighting plan convenient, but it also gave the wine cellar more character and persona — ultimately making this wine cellar more distinct and memorable!
