Custom Wine Cellar Build – Completed Custom Wine Cellar – Feedback From Client
Hi Jerry,
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars did an awesome job of our wine racks. Jerry was a pleasure to work with. He was very professional and really knew his stuff. Though some parts were delivered damaged, he was quick to resolve the issue and we had the replacement parts in no time. The geography (Jerry in California and we are in New Jersey) was not a hindrance at all. We were able to get things done via phone and email.
Jerry also recommended an awesome installer, Richard from Wine Cellar Installations in New Jersey. He was very professional and in and out in no time.
The combination of the racks Jerry designed and manufactured along with Richard’s expertise made the experience of building the wine cellar seamless and fun! There were no problems at all. In fact, I asked Richard a couple of times if there were any issues with the install, and he said no!
I give these guys an A+++++!!
Custom Wine Cellars New Jersey Wine Cellar Builders Sneak Peek
Are you like the Kapurs with big dreams for your wine cellar but have limited space? Coastal Custom Wine Cellars can create your ideal wine cellar. There are four important things to consider when designing your custom wine cellar:
- The size of your wine cellar
- Wine racks that will best display your wine
- The type of wood you want to use for your custom wine cellar
- Types of wine cellar cooling systems
The Size of Your Wine Cellar
The size of your wine cellar space will determine the overall design of the cellar. The Kapurs in Short Hills, New Jersey had a small space with a depth of 152 inches and a width of 53 inches. They wanted to maximize that small space so we placed the wine racks along the left side leaving plenty of room to maneuver on the right side. We also kept the design simple and elegant so as not to overpower the space. In the end, having a small space was an advantage to the Kapurs because it lowered construction costs.
Wine racks that will best manage, store and display your wine
Wine bottles vary in sizes and shapes and people often want to display certain bottles of wine in different ways. To make this cellar elegant we made an open diamond bin design at the bottom that allows case management storage and storage for large format and odd-shaped wine bottles. These sections are deep enough to safely hold multiple bottles.
The New Jersey Kapurs wanted to use materials that were not only economical but also helped the proper circulation of air in and around the bottles, so we used 1”x 2” redwood slats to create a lattice design instead of solid wood. For single bottle storage on top of the diamond bins, we designed a high-reveal display row that pitches the bottles at a 15° angle. This will allow full visibility of the Kapurs’ finest wines with no obstructions.
On the top row, we provided what we call a universal opening which gives more wine storage space for standard-size wine bottles. On the back wall, wine racks were installed with a small opening and a wine table wherein the Kapurs can access and pour wine to their heart’s content.

The Type of Wood You Want to Use for Your Custom Wine Cellar
Our goal is to provide our customers with a variety of wine cellar design options so they can create a dream cellar that perfectly meets their needs. That’s why Coastal Custom Wine Cellars New Jersey prides itself on the availability of wood types, colors, grain patterns, and finish options to make wine racks that suit our customers’ needs, tastes, and budgets.
The longevity of the wood to be used will determine the strength and durability of the wine racks to store hundreds of wine bottles without any fear of collapse.
The Kapurs chose unfinished premium redwood wine racks which not only created a beautiful and subtle effect but were also affordable and durable. They come in a variety of colors from white to pink to red and reddish brown. There’s no need to finish the wood since premium redwoods develop deeper color over time. It is also 100% biodegradable and has a natural resistance to decay. The Kapurs enjoyed great savings while enjoying the beauty of redwoods.

Types of Wine Storage Cooling Systems
After drinking a glass of wine, it is possible to determine if the wine was properly preserved or not. That’s why wine cooling has to be considered when designing your wine cellar. Our wine-cooling solutions will certainly make your wine mature gracefully by regulating the temperature and humidity of your wine cellar.
We offer many wine cellar cooling options including the following cooling units:
WhisperKOOL Refrigeration Units
Whisperkool products have a high level of accuracy for controlling the temperature and managing humidity levels. In Short Hills, New Jersey the Kapurs utilized a self-contained Whisperkool XLT cooling system because it suited the limited space and could exhaust to an unfinished room that would not exceed 85F degrees. Also, reliable WhisperKOOL units can be installed without the assistance of an HVAC contractor. This helped the Kapurs stay well within their budget.
Split Cooling Units
The components of this wine cellar refrigeration system from WhisperKool are split into two. The condensing unit can be placed outside or inside and we provide a variety of models and sizes for this cooling system.
Creating and maintaining an ideal and perfectly designed wine cellar depends on the following factors: the size of your wine cellar, the ways you want to display your wine bottles, the type of wood you want to use for your wine racks, and the wine cooling system.
Just like the Kapur family in Short Hills, New Jersey, make your wine room a perfect resting place for your wines and a fun place for entertaining friends with Coastal Custom Wine Cellars!

(00:01):
Hello again. This is another design recently installed in Short Hills, New Jersey, uh, designed and installed by Coastal Custom Wine Cellars. This job actually commenced right about a year ago, February 24th, 2010, it went through three or four changes. Um, and there was some time, a time-lapse actually, while the wine room was being created. And it was, uh, approved for production in late November, early December of 2010. As you can see, this is a longer room. It’s a, it’s a bit narrow. It’s 152 inches deep and just, uh, just shy of five feet wide. So what we did was we placed wine racks along the left side of the wine room, still allowing plenty of room to maneuver down the, uh, down the wine cellar here. And we placed some wine racks along the, the, the back wall, as you’ll see in, in some pictures I’ll share with you later.
(00:57):
Wine Cellar Refrigeration From WhisperKOOL
They’ve placed a cooling unit on this wall to help cool the room to 55 to 60 degrees. Let’s take a look at the left side wall, which is Elevation A. And for the most part, the Kapurs didn’t care for a lot of over-the-top presentations. A lot of arches and columns and built-up base moldings and such, which are certainly available. They wanted to keep this simple, uh, balance and, and some elegance to the wine room. Because of its size, they didn’t wanna really overpower it. So what we all decided on ultimately was with a great deal of input from the Karpurs as well regarding their, their, uh, their collection and how they want it managed and displayed. We’ve had, um, for the most part, open diamond bin storage below the open diamond bins here allow for, um, case management storage, large format bottles, such as 1.5 liters.
(01:48):
Wine Racks With a High Reveal Display Row
You can even put split bottles in here. The halves we’ve got, uh, for single bottle storage above the diamonds. We start with a pitched, what we call a high-reveal display row, which pitches the bottle at a 15-degree angle. And then as you can see, additional storage above that. These openings are large enough for most of the 750-milliliter bottles in the marketplace. I actually call it a universal opening. And, uh, you know, very odd shaped bottles, um, large formats and such can be placed here in the diamonds on the back wall, which is 53 inches wide. They, uh, they did want a small opening so that they could pour some wine, uh, decant, some wine just set things down while they’re actually in the wine room. So we created this opening, which they’ll place some artwork of their own here in this area at some point.
(02:35):
We’ve got a solid wood tabletop here, and then, of course, some stemware glasses, so some stemware storage. Just above that, this wine cellar was created. As you’ll see from the pictures here very shortly in the premium redwood unfinished. It’s quite beautiful, very subtle, uh, color and grain variations, which actually lend quite a bit of character. It’s, it’s a, a very popular choice. These are overhead views of the wine room. The diamond bins. You can see these are lattice style. It’s a series of one-by-twos rather than a solid piece of wood, one by 12 here. And the Kapurs chose this for two reasons. Number one, the open or the lattice style allows for good airflow in and around the bottles. It’s helping to keep a more even constant temperature. And it’s indeed it’s a little bit less money than the solid one by 12, simply because we’re using less material. I wanna show you some pictures. This is the before picture if you will. You’ll notice they have a, a, a beautiful, uh, brick, barrel-shaped ceiling here. And on the right side wall, this is the whisper, cool self-contained cooling unit that was placed in the wine room.
(03:56):
Premium Redwood Ideal for Home Wine Cellars
And as you can see, they’re just about ready to install here. The floor is down. The first picture is indeed the left side wall that we saw in the design with the high reveal display row. This is premium redwood. You see the subtle color variation. It’s unfinished. There’s no need to finish the wood whatsoever. Uh, premium redwood will age and mature, develop more color over the months and the years, and indeed is an ideal wood for, uh, the wine storage environment that the, the temperature and the humidity. As you can see, the open area here in the back, and we can see that a little bit better with picture number two. There’s not quite yet any, uh, artwork here as we mentioned, but you can see they’ve got enough room to store wood cases above the glasses hanging upside down the cooling unit. So all in all, a small cellar very well put together, well designed, well installed very nicely by, um, by Rich of wine cellar installations was in and out of there in the day.
