Beautiful Custom Wine Cellar Design for a Home in Orange County, California
You will be impressed by the custom wine cellar designs created by Coastal Custom Wine Cellar for the new owners of a beautiful home located on the cliffs at Newport Coast in California. Our creative team transformed a spare bathroom into a gorgeous wine room before the new home was finished. Learn more about the features we incorporated into the design.
Stylish Custom Wine Cellar Designs: Racking and Lighting
In this project, the owners Kim and Mike, had bought a new home on the Newport Coast in California. They were moving from their old home in Arizona and wanted the project to be completed before they moved in. They had a spare bathroom that they thought would rarely be used. It was a standard shower and bathtub combination with tiles.
Wine Cellars by Coastal’s job was to quickly turn the unused bathroom into a great-looking and functional wine cellar. The bathroom, measuring just 8’ x 6’ x 8’, had to be a fully climate-controlled functional wine room.
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars took out the original flooring, all the plumbing, and reduced the room to a bare finish. The walls had to be rebuilt with the proper insulation and a special vapor barrier to make sure the drywall was properly moisture proofed.
After assessing the client’s needs, we created 3-dimensional drawings so they could visualize the completed wine cellar. After the owners approved the CAD images, we started the construction by gutting the room, taking out the original flooring, plumbing, drywall, tiles, and fixtures, and turning the room into a bare finish.
As we always do on every wine room installation project, we added a vapor barrier and insulation to achieve a stable environment and prevent wine storage issues. Creating an airtight seal would prevent temperature fluctuations and protect the wines from being spoiled.

Mike, the Happy Owner of this Elegant Custom Wine Cellar
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars has been designing stylish wine rack systems for many years now. With our extensive experience in building beautiful wine rooms, we have helped many clients create a safe and functional place for their prized collection.
No job is too small or too big for our passionate team. Regardless of the size and shape of the wine room, we can convert it into a stunning wine display and storage area.
Combining Different Bottle Configurations to Create a Unique Custom Wine Cellar Design
In this residential wine cellar project in California, we customized the wine racks, achieving a wine storage system that could hold a total of 482 bottles. The limited space did not hinder us from coming up with an innovative custom wine cellar design.
The wine racks look elegant, consisting of stylish features. They were elevated 1.5 ft. off the floor and equipped with base molding and crown molding at the ceiling. We installed the wine racks on the right and back walls.
Right Wall
Upon entering the wine cellar, you will see a lattice-style arch display opening on the right wall, lit with concealed LED lighting. We added a horizontal display row above it to accommodate one to two 3-liter bottles of wine with a label forward orientation. The rest of the racking at the top section of the right wall are individual wine racks.
The arch display area comes with a tabletop where the owners can decant, serve, and store wines. We installed display rows on both sides of the arch, which pitch the bottles at an angle.
At the bottom section, we included diamond bins intended for bulk storage. Other racking styles we incorporated in this area are horizontal bins for storing 1.5-liter bottles and magnums, individual wine racks, and wooden case storage bins.
Back Wall
The back wall is shorter than the left wall. It consists mostly of single storage racks at the top and bottom sections. We also added a high reveal display row in the middle of the racking, which can hold 750ml bottles. We installed an LED lighting system above it to highlight the bottles. Below it are two horizontal display areas for large format bottles.
Wine Cellar Cooling System
CellarPro Wine Cellar Cooling System
A wine cellar cannot perform its function correctly without an efficient wine refrigeration system installed in it. At Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, we offer high-grade climate control systems from top-notch manufacturers in the industry, such as Wine Guardian WhisperKOOL, US Cellar Systems, and CellarPro.
In this custom wine cellar design project in California, we utilized a wine cooling unit from CellarPro, which we installed on the left wall of this residential wine room. It is a self-contained 1800 model, which is known for its maximum cooling efficiency.
Custom Wine Cellar Door
At Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, we always make sure that every door we install is stylish and sealed correctly. In this project, we installed a Barolo custom wine cellar door, which consists of a wooden frame and dual-paned glass panel. We used insulated glass panels and installed weather stripping to help maintain the efficiency of the cooling unit.
All our doors are exterior grade, which means they are engineered to withstand the very humid conditions in refrigerated wine cellars. They are highly resistant to warping and shrinkage.
