Custom Wine Cellar with Beautiful Lighting Built for a Wine Geek in Orange County
We had a client in Orange County, California, who is a wine geek. She loves to entertain friends and host wine-tasting parties at her home. Before the construction project was completed, she only had a few bottles stored in her house because she did not have a fully built wine cellar. Instead, she was storing her collection 20 miles from her house. As her collection grows, she decided to utilize a seldom-used room into a custom wine cellar.
Designing a Custom Wine Cellar in Orange County, California
In this last video of our interview with our favorite wine geek, we see how it all comes together. From the rich look of the wine racking itself through to the christening party, the wine geek wine room story is now complete.
We cover the process of stocking her wine cellar, and the first bottle to be racked is a 2002 “Penfold’s Grange” from Australia. We also go over how our wine geek used an Excel spreadsheet and an online program to keep track of her wine stored in her custom wine cellar in Orange County, California..
Custom Wine Cellars Orange County Wine Geek Part Four
In this project, a wine geek sought the help of Coastal Custom Wine Cellars to build a functional custom wine cellar in an unused room in her home. She realized it would be much more convenient for her to have her own wine room at home than to travel 20 miles back and forth to access her collection. The owner had a specific budget for her project.
In the Orange County Wine Geek Video Above
- Leslie tells us the story of her custom wine cellar in Orange County, California, starting from the first bottle she received – a 2002 Penfolds Grange – to the organization and categorization of her wine collection.
- Leslie explains how she used moving boxes to transfer her wine from storage lockers to her custom cellar. She discusses her wine sourcing, mainly from wine lists, and her experience of being “boxed in” by wine boxes during the setup process.
- Leslie utilizes a website called Cellar Tracker to keep her wine inventory organized and accessible. She shares how it helps her locate specific wines in her collection, making it easier to cater to guests’ preferences.
Wine Storage System: Custom and Semi-Custom Wine Racks
As a professional wine cellar builder in California, our team always finds innovative wine storage solutions regardless of your budget. The client had more than 2000 bottles in her collection, consisting of different wine varieties and bottle sizes.
To create a beautiful wine rack system without going beyond the budget requirements of the client, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars incorporated custom and semi-custom wine racks to create a stylish wine display based on the owner’s needs. The custom wine racks were built from scratch, while the semi-custom wine racks were ready-made. These wine racks were built with the same height, depth, and thickness using Premium Redwood.
When installed together, one cannot identify which storage units are custom and semi-custom because all of the wine racks were manufactured from the same wood quality and craftsmanship. We incorporated features into the design according to the client’s requirements.
Our team incorporated wine rack openings for smaller bottles (375ml), standard bottles (750ml), and large format bottles (1.5L). We have completed a custom wine cellar in Orange County, California, that can accommodate 2772 bottles.
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars delivered the wine racks to the site together with the photos and detailed instructions to make the assembly easier for the contractors. They assembled the wine racks in the owner’s garage before they brought them into the wine cellar.
Wine Racks Installed on the Right Side of the Entryway
Completed Custom Wine Cellar in Orange County, California
Upon entering the wine cellar, to the right of the entryway, we combined modular and custom components at the bottom section. The wine rack openings were designed to accommodate splits (small openings) and large format bottles like Champagne and Pax Syrah (4”x4” openings). The racking for the oversized bottles is double deep to maximize storage capacity.
Right Wall Wine Racks
You will find some custom wine racks on the right wall. The top section consists of single racking designed with standard openings. There is a wooden grill cover that hides the wine-cooling unit. A display row that lines the middle of the racking pitches the bottles at an angle.
The bottom section has double-deep wine racks. We added a tabletop that spans the entire wall to provide a place for serving the wine. It was made from Premium Redwood and clear lacquer was applied to protect it from spills.
Back Wall Wine Racks
The back wall consists of 8-foot semi-custom wine racks at the top section. We included 23-inch-deep single-bottle wine racks at the bottom section. This racking depth allows the owner to place one bottle first and push it to the back and then put the second one in front of it. Like the right wall, this wall also has a display row to highlight some of the client’s favorite wines.
A Better Way to Manage the Client’s Wine Collection
The Wine Geek Uses a Cellar Tracker for Better Wine Management
It took around nine hours to simply put the bottles in the correct locations in the wine racks, and this did not include categorizing or inventorying where they were! Our wine geek then took another day and a half to create a log of every category and where every bottle was located. Using Cellar Tracker, a Web 2.0 website, our client input all her wine allowing her guests to post their personal reviews of a particular wine based on its location in her wine cellar! It seems to us that you can’t get more geeky than that!
By way of an example of why she did this, our wine geek explained that if she is entertaining and is asked by a guest if they can try a “Copin Syrah,” she was able, in Cellar Tracker using her iPad, to select “Syrah” – “Copin” ‘show me by drinking window’ which “Copin” was ready and where it was located in her cellar so that she could go straight to it. Smart!
When you see the cheese table at the wine cellar christening party, you will wish you were one of the 40 people there. For sure, you will begin to get an appreciation for the motivation and fun of having your own wine cellar. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our favorite wine geek for sharing her experience for us all to enjoy.
