Wooden Wine Racks Dominate This Home Wine Room

Secondary to a cellar’s climate control system, wine racks are cornerstone pieces that govern how your wine bottles are displayed. They come in different materials, including metal, cable, and wood. Contemporary home wine closets like this one typically combine natural and modern materials to create the racking. Still, for this wine cellar, the owner went for an entirely wooden, custom wine racking piece that looked ultra-neat!

Home Wine Room Racking Design that Caters to Different Bottle Sizes

Pinots, Sangrias, Cabernet, and a few Don Perignon are just several of the wines this owner collects. If you’re a wine collector, you’d know that not all wines and liquors have the same volume. Hence the need to have a home wine rack that could accommodate bottles from the standard 750ml to the large formats (>1500ml).

The design Andre incorporated into this cellar’s wine racks included seven types of compartments. On the left and right sides of the cellar, you’ll find double-deep horizontal wine shelves on the upper half of the racks and deep cubbies for boxes at the bottom half. The central shelf is wider in size, consisting of x-bins and horizontal shelves at the bottom, followed by two rows of high reveal racks, then six rows of the cork-forward, standard 750 shelves.

As you step inside the cellar, a decanting table with a fairly large custom arch greets you. No matter how narrow the space is to walk around inside, the owner could still pour his wines into his stemware without bringing the bottles out of the cellar.  This is one of the ways to ensure that your wine is still served at the right temperature!

The Benefits of Using Maple to Produce a Wine Rack

The colour and texture of your wine rack affect the overall look of your residential wine room, especially when it occupies a large portion of the space. For wooden wine racks, you can choose from a variety of wood which ranges from reddish-brown to dirty-white hues. Sometimes, the wood is coated to achieve a particular color and finish. For this project, though, Andre didn’t have to put much effort into polishing the racks because Maple already looks beautiful, even without stains.

Maple is a type of hardwood that’s sturdy and durable. It naturally comes in off-white with reddish-brown hues, so it’s perfect if you want a more zen, fresh-looking wine cellar.  Maple also has a closed grain pattern which makes it smoother and more subtle. With its decay-resistant properties, it can last for a long time as a wine cellar rack.

One Special Secret: Repurposed Wine Barrel Ceiling

As you enter the wine room and gaze up, you’ll find the ceiling covered in what seems to be wooden planks. Don’t be fooled though, these aren’t you’re ordinary wooden ceiling. Every “plank” is actually repurposed wine barrel parts. These weathered oak vessels, having once cradled and matured exquisite vintages, now find new purpose as they grace the ceiling with their timeless allure. The aged oak wood was beautifully arranged to create a visually appealing pattern.

The scent of aged wood and faint traces of wine permeate the air, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that pays homage to the winemaking tradition. This unique use of repurposed wine barrels not only showcases their beauty but also serves as a reminder of the storied history of winemaking, providing an immersive experience for wine enthusiasts.

Home Wine Room Glass Door Lock System

This simple yet classy numerical pad ensures that the wine collection is secured.

Wine barrels have different parts, each exposed differently to the aging wine. For this home wine cellar’s ceiling, we used the cooperage part of the wine barrels. We were able to secure rights to flatten out wine barrels and repurpose the cooperage for our ceiling. The cooperage is the tabletop portion of a wine barrel where you can see stamps to distinguish every barrel. We were still able to preserve the markings and you can see some of them inside this wine cellar.

Protecting the Wine Cellar with a Passcode-Secured Door Lock System

Since this cellar had quite a minimalistic aesthetic, Andre maintained that kind of balance by installing a simple wine room glass door with a wooden jamb and ball-bearing hinges. You can see through the glass without any obstruction because he did away with glass etching which you can see in other glass wine cellar doors.

In relation to this, the next best thing you can provide for your wine collection is a well-secured door system that prevents both air and unauthorized people from going in and out of your cellar. Wine cellars are not that cheap to build, and choosing to commission a full, climate-controlled home wine room tells us how valuable your wine collection is. If you’re fond of hosting parties or inviting many friends, acquaintances, and guests over, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars suggests adding a lock on your wine cellar glass door like in this project.

While there are plenty of door locks in the market, the owner wanted to upgrade the lock system to ensure more security; thus, we brought in a digital keypad door lock and attached it to the wooden job above the door knob. To open a keypad-secured door, you need to enter a numerical combination instead of inserting an actual key into a keyhole. This type of lock doesn’t have the risks of knob locks, deadbolt locks, padlocks, and mortise, which can be easily broken into.

If you’re collecting limited edition Don Perignons, Sangrias, Cabernet Sauvignons, Pinots, and other specialty wines, investing in a good lock system is worth the bucks. If you want to explore other types of door locks that are great for the kind of wine cellar door you have, our experts at Coastal Custom Wine Cellars will surely walk you through your best options!
